Whole-house water filtration systems can be expensive, there’s no doubt about that. You can easily plop down just as much money for an in-home water softener and filter combo as you would for a solid used car. However, what many homeowners do not realize is that there are actually several options available for those who are just looking for cleaner water, or who are looking to eliminate odors from their current water supply.

Whole-house water filtration systems

Whole House Reverse Osmosis SystemMany homeowners know about the water filters that attach to their house’s main water supply. In some cases, these water softeners and filtration systems came with the property when it was purchased, and other times, the whole-house system seems to be the only logical option available.

Whole-house water filter systems, if they were not included with the purchase of a new home, can be expensive, though. You may be able to pick up a decent water filter system for less than $800, but in many cases you can expect to pay upwards of $1,000 or even $3,000 or more for a comprehensive water softener and filtration system.

Individualized options - portable water filters

For those who tend to like the less-expensive route, at least when you look at the short-term costs, there are a number of "portable" water filtration options for homeowners on a budget, or who prefer portability over a fixed treatment option.

 Shower-head water filters

Shower head water filters are exactly what the name implies — you attach these filters to your shower’s head, or in some cases, the filter actually includes a shower head, and that’s about it. These types of filters are generally very inexpensive, usually under $100, and the filters can last anywhere from 6 months to a year or more; this depends on the brand, and how often you use the shower, though.

Kitchen water filters

Product Details

Water filters for kitchens come in a few different forms — water pitcher filters, under counter water filter systems, and counter top water filter systems. If you are simply concerned with price — water pitcher filters are the way to go — oftentimes running under $20. While this will give you a very easy way to purify your water for drinking and cooking, you have to keep in mind that the pitcher filter will take up room in your refrigerator, if you like your water cold. Plus, the filters themselves, especially if you filter a lot of water, will need to be replaced on a regular basis.

They each have their drawbacks, but because they are oftentimes connected directly to your water’s supply, you do not have to mess with heating and cooling of water to suit your current needs.

In reality, there are several options available to homeowners who want cleaner, and more pleasant tasting water. Now that you know what is available, it’s up to you to decide what works best for you.
